D.J. Palladino's "review" of Natalie Cole's recent concert was surprising. It seems that, like many critics, he is unable to understand an artist unless he can fit the performer into a specific stereotype. He clearly expected Ms. Cole to perform only her R&B hits and was disappointed when she colored outside of his narrow lines. There were also a few old geezers at the show who left early when Natalie went beyond the realm of smooth jazz and cranked up the R&B energy. Unfortunately, both Mr. Palladino and those jazz enthusiasts arrived at the Granada with their own misconceptions. Natalie Cole is not a one-trick pony. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated her exceptional singing in multiple genres, racking up Grammy Awards and huge sales in the pop, jazz and R&B categories. Her song selection at the Granada was a direct reflection of her love of many types of music and her performance showcased her extraordinary versatility as a singer. Perhaps Mr. Palladino missed the thunderous applause, the curtain call and the artist's encore which included a song that had been requested earlier. The song was Natalie's sensational version of "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You," which transcended Sting's original and, once again, brought the crowd to its feet.

I loved the Natalie Cole concert! I thought the mix of music was perfect.
As for the old geezers leaving late. Many of the people that came to that concert were there to see the newly remodeled Granada and to be seen. People were way over dressed. I spent the first few minutes of the concert helping some woman locate her diamond watch that had falling off her wrist. The couple to the left of me had a special card waiting for them on their seats when they arrived - what was that all about? The lady on the other side of me, who wasn't much older than me, plugged her ears because she thought the music was too loud. It all made me laugh! This is Santa Barbara, the place that I have lived for the past 20 years, so you would think that I would be use to it by now. But, I have never seen so many stuffy individuals, who don't know how to have a good time. I consider myself to be upper class on the money chain, but this was embarrassing.
