STUCK IN LIMBO: “Overall, this is such a bummer,” says Michael Larner, whose wish to build a winery, turn an existing building into a tasting room, and host some special events at his Ballard Canyon vineyard has caused a stir with neighbors, who’ve effectively stopped the permitting process for now. “It just sits on you like an albatross.”

UNHAPPY CANYON: “It’s functional for what it is,” said Bob Field (right) of Happy Canyon Road, who is standing here with neighbors Frank Blundo and Judith Wright near the site of a recent non-wine-related wreck. “But it’s not functional for all of the tourists who are here entertaining themselves and drinking.”

FATAL FEARS: “We all have our stories of people we near-missed,” said Cerene St. John who rents a house in Ballard Canyon, which she doesn’t believe is appropriate for more tasting rooms and special events. “People have been injured, but no one has been killed, and we don’t want to see that happen. What’s it worth?”

WRECKS VS. STUDIES: Though a county study concluded that there has not been a rise in drunken-driving incidents with the growth of the wine industry, Ballard Canyon resident Eric Gregersen finds that hard to believe. “I don’t see how they could approve additional wine-tasting facilities and events when we don’t have a road that’s up to the standards,” said Gregersen, who erected special posts to protect his well after so many people had crashed into his property.
