Dorothy slept peacefully into the Lord’s embrace in the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2013. She was born in Texas, to Mollie Edith and Paul W. Carrell, on May 18, 1929. The family settled in Newhall, CA where her dad opened the Carrell Chevrolet Agency.

She enrolled in University of California Santa Barbara, attending the Riviera campus, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1952. Playing the baritone horn, she performed in Dr. Faulkner’s Brass Choir. Dorothy was a founding and charter member (1962) of the Santa Barbara chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Society of Woman Educators. Upon completing a 34 year teaching career in Santa Barbara School District, she retired in 1988. She taught at Wilson School from 1954 – 1979, and Peabody School from 1979 – 1988. Her many students remember her fondly for her caring concern and quick wit, as she masterfully guided their on task learning. Class stage productions were memorable.

Dorothy was an active supporter of the Santa Barbara Youth Theatre Productions back in the 1960’s and 70’s. She was a dedicated board member and also active as the production coordinator and prop master for many of their productions.

Dorothy made many friends as the music director at San Roque Catholic Church from 1988 to 1994. For years she greeted many loyal customers at the Four Winds and the Tree House restaurants.

Residing in a Maravilla Court suite since 2008, Dorothy enhanced that community by looking out for others, spreading loving good cheer, running the store and winning at Bingo! She will be missed!!

Predeceased beloved include her sister, Betty Jane Carrell Schield (2012) and her life-long soul mate Helen “Mac” MacDonald (2001). She leaves a niece, Marti Lamb (Redding, CA) and nephews Tom Schield (Santa Clarita, CA) and Bob Schield (Great Falls, MT) and her devoted caregivers, Betty Guereca and Joan Blanco.
