Catalina Rosas stepped into heaven on January 15, 2011, while surrounded by her family in Carpinteria, California. She was born November 25, 1924, in Alhambra, California. In 1937, her family settled in La Conchita Beach. Among the many who will greatly miss her encouraging presence are her daughters Rebecca M. Venuti of La Quinta, California and Beatrice V. Talaugon-Dunn of La Conchita Beach and their spouses, Joe Venuti and Jerry J. Dunn.

Catalina Rosas was an independent minded, free spirit–a world traveler interested in many things. An unconventional perspective was part of her genetic make-up. Her father, Francisco Razo, was an indigenous Indian shaman from the state of Michoacan, Mexico. Catalina’s mother, Magdalena, survived the Mexican Revolution and her Uncle Juan Herrera rode with Pancho Villa. Her daughter Bea recalls her mom’s appreciation of her passion for surfing. During the summer months in junior high and high school, Catalina knew where to find her daughter. If there were evening waves she would knew not to expect her home in time for dinner. She would know Bea was having a surfing session with her best friend, Chris Coker or Catalina’s godson, Rich Razo.

During her 86 years of life, Catalina resided in Montecito, Carpinteria and La Conchita Beach. Part of her family’s life in La Conchita is currently featured in an exhibition at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, 956 Maple Avenue, Carpinteria through March 21, 2011, 684-3112.

A celebration of her life will be held at the First Carpinteria Baptist Church, 5026 Foothill Road, Carpinteria, California at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2011. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her honor to Assisted Home Hospice, 228 W. Carrillo Street, Suite B, Santa Barbara, CA 93101, phone: (805)569-2000.
