Date of Death

September 24, 2009

Valwyn Roy Schroeder Hooper entered into rest on September 24th, 2009 at age 74 in West Chester, PA., with her beloved family by her side. She fought cancer valiantly and spent her last week at Hospice with her family singing to her, re-telling stories of the past, and caressing her along her quick journey to the other side. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Valwyn moved to Santa Barbara in 1958, where she earned an advanced degree in Sociology and stayed on as a professor at UCSB. She remained active in human rights and women’s causes, retiring as the Director of the Tri-County AIDS project in 1996.

Valwyn moved to Pennsylvania in 2004 to be near her two youngest grandchildren. She is survived by daughters, Paige Kaye, Allison Hooper and Ashley Hooper-Sclar and son-in-law Casey Sclar and four grandchildren. Valwyn will be best remembered for her generosity, southern belle style, and quick intellect as well as her open, accepting approach to life.

A Memorial celebration of Valwyn’s life will be held at the Botanic Garden on June 26th at 11am.
