Henry Brant

1913 - 2008, Santa Barbara

Henry Brant

Henry Brant, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, died at his Santa Barbara home on April 26, 2008. He was 94.

During his 75-year career, Henry was a profound inspiration to his students and to the professional musicians he encountered. He enjoyed a distinguished career as America’s foremost composer of acoustic spatial music, producing 100 spatial works. A master orchestrator, Brant recently completed his textbook on this topic, Textures & Timbres, to be published this summer by Carl Fischer, NYC.

Henry was loved and admired worldwide for his wit, energy, brilliant mind, originality, expansive spirit, high musical standards and generous nature. Santa Barbara locals knew him by his trademark gray sweats and matching cap with visor.

Henry Brant is survived by his wife, Kathy Wilkowski of Santa Barbara; daughter Piri Kaethe Friedman of Portland, Ore.; sons Joquin Ives Brant of Escazu, Costa Rica, and Linus Coraggio of Manhattan; brother, Bertram Brant of Dayton, Ohio; and four grandchildren: Matthew, Jesse, Rachel and Jade.

A celebration of Henry’s life is being planned.
