First Cold Spring Bridge Suicide Since New Barrier

Sheriff's deputies Monday morning responded to an apparent suicide at Cold Spring Bridge at 1:40 a.m. and found the body of 30-year-old Santa Monica resident Peter Roycewicz near Stagecoach Road, which runs under the 1,148-foot span on Highway 154 just north of San Marcos Pass. Read story.

Cold Spring Bridge Site of 55th Suicide

A 34-year-old Santa Barbara man—Jefferey Scott Zubiate—jumped off the Cold Spring Canyon Bridge on 2/19, marking the 55th suicide from the bridge since it was built in 1964. Meanwhile, a small but vocal group continues to push against what they call a “troubled proposal” to build suicide barriers along the historic structure. Read story.

Council Votes for Suicide Barrier Transparency

Spurred on by Councilmembers Dale Francisco and Frank Hotchkiss, the Santa Barbara City Council voted to instruct Mayor Helene Schneider to ask the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments to ask Caltrans to share a secret engineering study about suicide barrier alternatives for the Cold Spring Bridge with the head of the state's Office of Historic Preservation.
