Campfire along Rattlesnake Canyon during fire season

Hiking through Rattlesnake Meadow (aka “Tin Can Flat”) early Sunday morning with a friend, we found evidence of a campfire with 18-inch-high, black burn marks on the boulder behind it. We had been through the area on Friday but no campfire remnants were there at the time. A large wooden sign at the beginning of Rattlesnake Canyon forbids firearms, mountain bikes, overnight camping, and campfires or fires of any sort.

Despite the fact that the creek below is still flowing a bit, the canyon is very dry, and the fire danger is high as we endure our third year of drought. City Fire has been notified and will be keeping an eye on this as an “area of suspicion.”
