Domonick Alonzo Love

A Santa Barbara homeless man has been arrested for raping a 15-year-old girl during a Westside house party last week. Police spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood said Domonick Alonzo Love, 18, was booked Monday on multiple felony charges and is being held in County Jail.

Harwood said officers responded to the Cottage Hospital Emergency Room on March 20 to investigate a rape. They learned that the night before the victim met with “acquaintances from the downtown Santa Barbara homeless community” and accompanied Love — who goes by the street name “Slim” — to a party. The victim became drunk and was then assaulted by Love, Harwood said.

“Based on the descriptions provided of the suspect’s appearance and tattoos, and his moniker, several Santa Barbara Police Officers immediately recognized the suspect as Love,” Harwood said in a media statement. “Love has had numerous contacts with police in Santa Barbara’s Downtown corridor since November 2013.”

Though officers and detectives canvassed the downtown area during their search for Love, they were unable to locate him until a Sheriff’s deputy responding to a disturbance in Santa Ynez on March 24 recognized Love as a wanted subject and contacted city police.

Just a misunderstood individual whom trouble just seems to follow. YEAH RIGHT! I guarantee you this guy's got contacts w/ police EVERYWHERE he's been!

This guy is scum who has just crossed the barrier into the realm of no-redeeming-value. The whole "travelers" group is populated with these sociopaths. It is past time to clean up this mess. Regardless of the tortured and abused past that may have formed these scum, they have become too dangerous to allow them to roam freely among us. Sorry travelers, freedom isn't free, you pay for it by resisting your predatory urges.

Yep, make sure to get in the fact that he was homeless, and let's all pat ourselves on the back for not being like him.

Since he appears to be possibly black, should the headline have said "Black man arrested for raping 15-year-old"?..

Of course, racial bigotry is no longer ok, but bigotry against the homeless is.

(For the acerbically-challenged, I do not condone rape or bigotry of any kind, and if this man is guilty of the crime of which he accused, he needs to be removed from society)

This man is really just barely a man. I wonder if running to Santa Ynez is telling of his guilt or involvement?

Well Bill Clausen, the fact that this scum is homeless is beside the point. Too bad that the Independent decided to label him that way. They should have used the term "Traveler," which these young, healthy, lazy, troublemakers prefer to call themselves. From what I have read and heard from people, these "Travelers" are not homeless due to circumstances beyond their control but rather have chosen this lifestyle as one of ultimate freedom. They perceive work as a burden and form of slavery and want to be free to live as they please, take drugs, and subsist on handouts. It's a free Country and they can pursue that lifestyle if they choose, but if they start to prey on folks they should be taken off the streets and put in jail until they agree to adopt a different mode of living.

"The victim BECAME DRUNK and was then assaulted by Love, Harwood said." Come again? It is almost always the case in matters of rape that the "victim" BECAME DRUNK. Isn't it about time we start taking a close look at this boilerplate? It absolves the "victim" of any personal responsibility in this situation. After all, she was DRUNK! One "victim" testified that when she "woke up," the perp was not only on top of her but in the throes of an orgasm. Look, rape is malum in se. No question. But people who show reckless disregard for their own safety are taking the spotlight away from the true victims of rape, many of whom have paid the full measure, death, for something they never invited in the first place.

So what kind of "normal" person wants to bro down with that community? A traveler in the making. Not to try to pin the guilt on the victim, after all, NO MEANS NO! But you got to wonder who wants to party with these scum?

You might be surprised who wants to party with these people if you were to follow them around 24/7 you would see...Some residents pick up on these younger street types and pay cash money for their company..Been going on for years when I was out there 30 years ago, I was too ugly Thank god but I saw many scum bag friends get picked up by hot rich babes..Open yer eyes

Sorry there Byrd, but eyes wide open & I guarantee you the victim in this case was not one of those hot rich babes you fantasize about.

If a man gets drunk and walks down Haley late at night, he stands a better chance at getting robbed. If wealthy man invests with unreputable broker, he might get swindled. If a drug user goes to a shady drug dealer, they might get burned. If a girl goes to a party and is not in control of herself, she might get raped. Not to blame the victim, but those are the facts of life.

That may be true AZ, but do you really think that those clamoring for this man's head would dare address the alcohol-fueled lifestyle that predicates these problems?

One of the reasons I have never been a drinking is because I always wanted to have my wits about me to A: Stay out of trouble, and B: Be able to physically defend myself if needed.

The answer is for people to teach their kids that there are dangerous folks who like to prey upon others, and staying sober and avoiding falling in with the wrong crowd greatly reduces your chance of being victimized.

That is very true, but some people believe that you should not have to worry about those things because its SB, or its CA, or its the USA, and you can dress like a hooker, get lost in substances, and act like a jackass, and nothing bad should happen.

Absolutely true AZ. As the saying goes: "If you live by the sword, you will die by the sword".
