What: Santa Barbara County residents will join hundreds of thousands of participants worldwide in clearing trash and debris from our beaches, shorelines, and inland waterways during this year’s international Coastal Cleanup Event, Saturday, September 21st from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Last year, over 900 local volunteers collected over 2,592 pounds of debris before it entered our waterways. Volunteers also reduced waste by bringing their own buckets, gloves and reusing bags.

When: Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to noon

Jalama Beach

Lookout Park Beach

Leadbetter Beach

Refugio State Beach

Rincon Park Beach

Santa Claus Lane

Tajiguas Beach

West Beach

How: Volunteers of all ages can participate at any of the sites listed. There is no need to pre-register. A beach captain will provide necessary instructions and supplies; however, participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable gloves, bags, or buckets to reduce waste. Why: Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for local residents to celebrate and give thanks to the beaches that make Santa Barbara County such an amazing place to live. Also, data collected from Coastal Cleanup Day can assist researchers and policy-makers in efforts to protect our beaches and waterways.

Who: This statewide event is presented by the California Coastal Commission. Locally, the event is organized by the County of Santa Barbara Public Works Department’s Resource Recovery & Waste Management Division, with the help of many local non-profits, businesses, governmental agencies, and generous individuals.
