Capps Announces Grant for the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics

Today, Rep. Lois Capps (CA-24) announced that the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics received an $812,500 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The grant will be used by the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics to establish and operate a clinic in Goleta in an effort to serve nearly 19,000 medically underserved people in Goleta, which currently has no community health center. The $812,500 is for a period running through January 31, 2015. Thereafter SBNC will receive $650,000 per year.

“Even though more and more people are receiving quality, affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act, neighborhood clinics will continue to play an important role in providing health coverage to the poorest in our community,” Capps said. “This grant will help the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics fill that role and allow them to continue the important work that they have been doing for years along the Central Coast.”

“SBNC is honored to have been awarded this grant, which will allow us to fill a critical healthcare gap in our community,” said Mark Palmer, board chair of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics.

The new Goleta clinic will serve 3,750 unduplicated patients and provide more than 13,500 medical, dental, and behavioral visits each year. The SBNC interdisciplinary team will also provide chronic disease management and preventive services, perinatal services, care for the homeless, and other enabling services to address barriers to health and wellbeing.
