Every year, National Nurses Week focuses attention on the diverse ways America’s 3.1 million registered nurses work to save lives and to improve the health of millions of individuals. National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has Registered Nurses that provide exemplary service to the entire community. At the May 7, 2013 Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisor’s meeting, Supervisor Steve Lavagnino will present a proclamation recognizing nurses’ commitment toward improving the health care status of members in our community.

National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. Despite our current economy where public health and nursing resources are diminishing, Public Health Department nurses working in our Health Care Centers and Community Health Programs continue to play a critical role in improving patient outcomes, increasing access to health care, and reducing health care costs in the community. We commend our nurses for their excellence and for their dedication to deliver the quality and innovative care that is essential towards meeting the complex and demanding healthcare needs of our community members.

Please contact Susan Klein-Rothschild to arrange for an interview with a nurse receiving the proclamation at the May 7, 2012 Board of Supervisors meeting.
