A homeless man from Eureka on probation for assault with a deadly weapon was arrested by Santa Barbara police last Friday for tampering with parked cars and resisting arrest. David Nieman, 22, is booked in County Jail with bail set at $2,500.

According to SBPD spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood, officers responded to City Lot 10 on Anacapa Street after they received a call of a man opening the doors of parked cars in the lot. The officers spotted Nieman peering into a number of vehicles and trying to open their doors. He gained access to a red Ford Mustang and remained inside for several seconds, Harwood said. He continued looking into other cars until he noticed the officers converging on his location.

Niemen tried to run, said Harwood, but was quickly apprehended after a short foot pursuit. He tried to discard the backpack he was carrying, which contained a set of jumper cables that he admitted to stealing. A sunglasses case was found on the ground nearby that Niemen also admitted he took. He refused, however, to say which cars they came from and police are still trying to track down the owners.
