Young Trees: Planting, Pruning and Care Workshop

Learn How to Prune Young Trees the Right Way at Young Tree Care Workshop on 2/2/13

Goleta Valley Beautiful, California ReLeaf, the Goleta Union School District, the Santa Barbara Unified School District and the Central Coast Urban Forest Council are among the co-sponsors of a Young Tree Care Workshop on Saturday February 2, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM Classroom instruction will begin at the Goleta Union School District Board Room, 401 N. Fairview Avenue, Goleta CA 93117 before moving to field experience at San Marcos High School.

The workshop is open to anyone who is interested in the planting and maintenance of trees in urban landscapes. The workshop will be taught in an easy to follow format by local and state experts in tree care. Members of the public, whether novices or those who have some experience at tree care will benefit, as well as more experienced tree care professionals looking for a refresher. Five community service credits are available for participating students. Pruning public shade trees will be emphasized, with additional fruit tree pruning discussion.

Workshop leaders Dan Condon, Bill Spiewak, Dougal House and Ken Knight will demonstrate techniques that professionals use to care for young public trees. Participants will get actual experience in pruning young trees on the San Marcos High School campus, with all work being done from the ground and no tree climbing involved. Hands-on field practice at the end of the workshop will allow attendees to quickly become proficient. There will be ample opportunities to discuss your specific questions with the speakers.

The workshop is made possible through support from the Central Coast Urban Forest Council, California ReLeaf, the Goleta Union School District and the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

You will participate in concise, practical sessions that will give you the working knowledge of best management practices for planting and pruning trees. All work is done from the ground, no tree climbing is involved. Emphasis is on public shade trees, and the similarities and differences of fruit tree pruning techniques. Participants will prune young trees on the campus of San Marcos High School as part of a supervised field examination.

High School and College Students are invited to attend and earn 5 community service credits. Professionals attending can use this workshop as a refresher and earn 5 continuing education credits. Participants are expected to participate in the entire session to receive professional/community service credit.

Open to all with an interest in trees and a desire to preserve and protect young shade trees.
