The infamous rifle held up by the police chief in Dallas in 1963 that the suspect Lee Harvey Oswald is supposed to have used to kill President Kennedy was a Russian 1891/30 Russian Mosin-Nagant sniper rifle. That rifle had a better sight than the Russian version.

The Russian model used in Dallas was and is one of the most widely used rifles in the world. Some 37 million were manufactured from 1891 to 1965. Millions were made in the U.S. for the Russian Army under the Czar. Hundred of countries and dozens of wars used this standard rifle.

It is a five-round, bolt-action rifle, not a submachine gun. It is equivalent to the American Springfield Rifle used in both the first and second world wars by the U.S. The Russian Mosin-Nagant was the sniper rifle of choice used by the Russians against the Germans and vice versa.

Today this very model can be purchased at gun stores and online for anywhere from $42 to $110.

Its history and reputation preceded it to that site in Dallas. It changed the history of the world again.
