Headless Household launches a Kickstarter campaign for its ninth album, an all-ballads affair

Now 30 years into its adventure, mixing and matching and reconfiguring musical genres, the Santa Barbara-born band Headless Household is joining the Kickstarter generation.

Currently working on its ninth album, this one an all-ballads affair, the group is seeking support of the financial and emotional kind from friends and neighbors.

It began humbly and earnestly enough in 1983 on the streets of Santa Barbara, with restless, genre-flexible musicians Dick Dunlap (keyboards), Tom Lackner (drums, percussives), Chris Symer (basses) and Joe Woodard (guitars, songs), and it has carried on through the years/decades, following a course which is alternately experimental, soothing and grooving, instrumental and vocal, game for what comes next. Jazz, free improv, Americana, Europe-ana, polka, prog rock, para-pop, groove moves, cinematic swatches and others sounds - including variously flavored balladry - are fair game in the Household.

The core group has had considerable and critical help from talented musical allies, onstage and on records, including saxists Tom Buckner and David Binney, trumpeter/vocalist Nate Birkey, singers Julie Christensen, Glen Phillips, Ellen Turner, the late Kenny Edwards and Arlene Dunlap, violinist Sally Barr, pedal steel etcetera-ist Bill Flores, harmonica ace Tom Ball, violinist Gilles Apap, bassists David Piltch, Jim Connolly and Jack Joshua and others, many of whom will be involved in the forthcoming album.

Anniversary numbers keep piling up lately. Last December, the group had its 20th (sorta) annual Xmas concert at Center Stage Theater, and in 2010, the band released its (belated) 25th anniversary with the release of its schizoid two-disc album Basemento, with a special CD release concert at the Lobero Theatre.

To date, Headless Household has a discography of eight title, on its in-house Household Ink Records label: Headless Household (1987), Inside/Outside USA (1993), ITEMS (1995), Free Associations (1999), mockhausen (2000), post-Polka (2003), Blur Joan (2005) and Basemento (2010).

With the help of Kickstarter friends - in a campaign with a deadline of June 4, 2013 - the band is hoping that the help of interested outsiders will make the ninth album a reality by the time of the Xmas concert at Center Stage in December of 2013. The beat (and intentional lack thereof) goes on.
