The Islamic Society of Santa Barbara’s plan to put a community center and mosque at the corner of Los Carneros Road and Calle Real had a conceptual hearing on Tuesday before Goleta’s Design Review Board. The society — which has been moving through the various stages of review and seven similar meetings since 2008 — moved the building slightly and added two additional parking spaces for a total of 44. Planning-wise, the project has not generated much controversy; but socially, the Islamic Society’s quest triggered enough emotionally charged response from letter writers that the city on Tuesday asked for the presence of a sheriff’s deputy.

Matt wrote a great article about the community center & mosque and the Islamic Society of SB here:

I was surprised by some of the nasty comments that recently showed up on Edhat. But also encouraged by the majority of comments calling for moderation and coexistance.
The new traffic circle at Los Carneros and Calle Real are what's causing the slight changes to the property.
I think the new building will be an asset for the community.

Traffic circles, or roundabouts, speed up the flow of traffic.
Nice try.

That traffic circle comment was meant to be read straight ... the community center's previous design didn't account for the new roundabout being put in. So the Islamic Society had to get approval for some minor modifications to accommodate the circle.
I think roundabouts are very effective.

That roundabout is a very unusual, nutty layout.
I'm very happy for the Islamic Society to have found a more permanent place of worship, many best wishes for the new Mosque.

I was at the meeting. Although I realize the wisdom of caution - as it turned out their was not the slightest hint of a need for security, the meeting was well run, many, including myself spoke in support of the Islamic Community Center, there were some concerns expressed - but most - if not all did not have a tone of - "we don't want these people here."
