Eight Colt AR-15 short-barreled rifles were recently added to SBPD motorcycles at a cost — including accessories and locked mounts — of $2,950 apiece. They were paid for with money raised by the Santa Barbara Police Foundation. SBPD spokesperson Sgt. Riley Harwood explained motorcycle cops have long needed the extra firepower, as they’re usually the first to arrive on-scene during “hot calls” but had only been armed with handguns. Sheriff’s Department and Santa Maria police motorcycles are already equipped with carbine rifles and collapsible shotguns, respectively.

Unlike Handguns and Shotguns, regarding passing scores, niether have enough over-penetrating power than a Rifled round has and by that there is no room for error when engaging suspects where innocents are concerned. Most States a No Miss policy to keep civilians from getting caught in the crossfire, does SBPD have the same Policy?

What a steal, but an AR on a motorcycle is a bit much.

Lame! Wait till someone gets inadvertently plucked! Like dou4now said. You have the bearcat/tank swat vehicle, what next bazooka's? mortar rounds? artillery?

And this is necessary why? Further militarization of local police departments. Economics aren't the only reason many police officers don't actually live in our area. They purposefully hire outside the area so the officers have less connection with the community- just like Ahmadinejad and Assad bringing in foreigners to police their populaces.
A lot of these tanks and guns are also leftovers from Iraq and soon hopefully Afghanistan.

This is perfect.
Jack-boots, Sam Browns, and shiny helmets aren't enough to provide "command presence" in The American Riviera? Confronting flip-flop tourists and non-English-speaking unlicensed drivers (oh, and let's not forget the smattering of African Americans courageous enough to navigate the most racist police department west of the Rockies) must be a terrifying experience for the motorcycle cop sitting in the shade of a four-way-stop intersection.
Cam Sanchez needs to keep cruising Craigslist looking for that next gig...and we need to pray he finds one before he next orders full body bandoliers for Casey Beutel and Aaron Tudor.

Cops with assault rifles, a gang injunction...we didn't need this before, but we need it now. Maybe we could find out what we were doing differently when we feel the need for this and go back to what we were doing then? Maybe we've waded too far into the river and need to turn back.
What next?

Beachgirl77 just can't bring herself to use the legal term "illegal aliens" for criminals that break into this country...
Although I'm OK with them having AR-15's, especially if the money is not coming out of public coffers, it seems kinda extreme but you do not want cops showing up as a first responder to find a gang banger with an arsenal of illegal weapons and be over matched.
I'm all giddy waiting for the bicycle cops to get the same weapons and to carry their ammo bandolero style, with the rifles in scabbards affixed like they were on horseback, as they cycle about our lil town..great photo opp for our German tourists to reminisce about the good old days before the wall came down...
