WHAT: What makes Antonia Bazzani different from other kids her age? Her desire to help find a cure for Diabetes, that’s what! Antonia, a 9 year old fifth grader at Montecito Union School has raised about $3000 as part of the ADA’s Tour De Cure “TEAM BAZZZANI.” In addition to raising money for this important cause Antonia is riding in the Tour De Cure, a cycling event taking place on November 17th in Santa Barbara. “I am doing the 38 mile ride because my Dad told me about the 8 mile and I thought it was too easy. Then he told me about the 38 mile and I said that it was perfect and I am pretty sure that he wants me to do the 8 but I am not budging.”

This determination carries through to her fundraising efforts as well. Antonia’s Aunt has Diabetes and is one of the main reasons that Antonia is so passionate about helping people living with Diabetes. When asked what she wants people to learn from her example she simply states “I want people to know that just because you are little doesn’t mean that you can’t accomplish something big.” Antonia proves this to be true. She’s a little person already doing big things.

The ADA invites you to join in supporting Diabetes awareness within the Santa Barbara community. Funds raised at this event will be used to establish an ADA chapter in Santa Barbara and to provide education and outreach to the underserved in the Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.

WHEN: The American Diabetes Association’s Tour De Cure event takes place on Saturday, November 17th, 2012

WHY: Today, there are nearly 26 million Americans—including an estimated 17,000 Santa Barbara County residents – who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, nearly 7 million people are unaware that they have the disease. If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.
