What are we waiting for? Do we want a future for our beloved children? I look around at all these optimistic parents with their adorable young ones and I wonder if it has yet sunk in that we are making the planet uninhabitable for future generations.

Yes, we, with our SUVs and flat-screen TVs and our perfect shades of paint for the nursery, are quite possibly dooming our offspring to lives of desperation and suffering. Food – we love it and depend completely upon it for our very existence, but we are interfering with the planet’s capacity to produce it.

Ask one of the wonderful folks at your local farmers’ market how inextricably linked food production is with climate and weather. Global warming is such an innocuous-sounding term for such a potentially devastating threat. Laugh at Al Gore all you like; at least he’ll be able to say he tried to warn us.

Please, people, if not for the sake of children, then for your pets or whomever/whatever you hold most dear: Find out the steps you need to take to create a sustainable lifestyle and actually take them. And, for goodness’ sake, vote only for politicians who recognize and acknowledge the importance of a healthy environment.
