This special event brings together members of James C. Carey’s family, long-time Santa Barbara residents, and the first recipients of the Fund, Dr. Chris and Dr. Maya Powers. The Cocktails for a Cause will take place May 18 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. Tickets are $25 per person and include a “mission possible” drink, hors d’oeuvres, music by hometown sensation Bad Jack and an opportunity to learn more about this group making a world of difference for more than 50 years.

Today, many young doctors are graduating medical school with loans in excess of $100,000. Deferment is an option for those interested in serving; however, upon returning from three years overseas, the accrued interest has the potential to increase the total loan by 50%. This burden of debt prevents young doctors from being able to follow a call to serve in the missions as early Mission Doctor; James Carey did with his family. The James C. Carey Memorial Fund was established to generate the income to make monthly medical school loan payments for doctors serving long term with MDA.

“We are grateful to the EOS Lounge and the Carey Family for hosting this evening,” said Elise Frederick, Executive Director of Mission Doctors. “Join us May 18 for drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a chance to hear about the James C. Carey Memorial Fund and Mission Doctors Association. Also on Friday, will be hometown musical sensation, Bad Jack. Dr. Carey was a truly inspiring individual; this fund will assure that his legacy of service will make it possible for other young doctors to follow their call to the missions.”
