The selected campers represent all five south coast public junior high schools: Santa Barbara, La Cumbre, La Colina, Goleta Valley, and Carpinteria Middle School. The girls, recommended by their science and math teachers, undergo a rigorous application process, including writing an essay and participating in an interview session.

Tech Trek is a one-week summer program where girls entering eighth grade, who show an interest and aptitude for math and science, are given an opportunity to explore science, mathematics, engineering and technology topics in a positive and encouraging environment.

Each AAUW branch in California that sends girls to Tech Trek provides full camperships to all their selected campers. For 2012, the Santa Barbara-Goleta Valley branch is able to do this for all 25 girls with the generous support of many individuals, organizations and businesses in our community, including Raytheon Corporation, ATK Space Systems, Montecito Bank and Trust, NuSil Technology, Storz Imagery and Women in Development.
