UCSB graduated 5,958 students in eight different ceremonies, bringing 40,000 visitors to the region. Former Santa Barbara Independent intern Kevin Zambrano served as a student speaker at the Saturday’s College of Creative Studies celebration. Also of note were the first Chicano Studies PhDs ever granted. In 2003, UCSB founded the first doctoral program in the field. The department itself was founded in 1969 and expanded after hunger strikes in 1989 and 1994.
