It took an early morning motorcycle ride through the hills above Los Angeles for George Lewis Jr. to realize his life, his love, his mission. That the story behind Twin Shadow’s sophomore record sounds like the start of a grainy 1960s biker movie is only a fraction of its appeal. Like its predecessor, Confess is rife with ’80s touchstones, but the sleek production and masterfully layered instrumentation far exceed anything Lewis has put his name to thus far. Lyrically, Confess finds Lewis negotiating the push and pull between love, lust, and emotional satisfaction. Album ender “I Don’t Care” is a moody waltz that features lines like “dance me around the room while you lie to me,” while “Run My Heart” opens with a Sting-patented guitar tone and a declaration of “You don’t own my heart.” The result is a stunningly twisted hybrid of love songs and road album that’s guaranteed to end up on any Best Of list worth reading. Twin Shadow plays SOhO Restaurant & Music Club (1221 State St.) on Saturday, August 18. Visit clubmercy.com for tickets.
