Given the folk-imbued roots of First Aid Kit’s U.S. debut, it’s hard to believe these sisters didn’t grow up in the heartland. The brainchild of Australia-by-way-of-Sweden siblings Klara and Johanna Söderberg, The Lion’s Roar is a hauntingly beautiful affair that draws comparison — and makes reference — to folk greats like Patsy Cline, June Carter, and Emmylou Harris. (Lead single “Emmylou” is an ideal jumping-off point.) Aided by Omaha legend and Saddle Creek label’s mastermind Mike Mogis, the Söderbergs put forth a collection that’s as vocally striking as it is instrumentally lush; strong harmonies and bold symphonic flourishes run rampant on tracks “I Found a Way” and “Dance to Another Tune.” Like 2011 strong finishers Other Lives, First Aid Kit have found their niche in mixing tried-and-true folk structures with something bigger, richer, and eerily moodier. And the result is nothing short of breathtaking
