Perhaps you’ve been told to save your pennies, but have you ever been directed to save seeds? Turns out that there is a whole system for collecting seeds and that the little guys are über-important to maintaining sustainable agriculture. Perhaps no one knows this better than Bill McDorman, founder of Seeds Trust, Inc., and executive director of Native Seeds/SEARCH (nativeseeds.org), an organization dedicated to the conservation and distribution of ancient agricultural seeds. McDorman will hold a one-day “Seed School Workshop” for anyone interested in learning about the history of seeds, the seed industry, pollination, harvesting, and seed exchanges, among other topics. The workshop takes place Saturday, January 28, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens (598 N. Fairview Ave., Goleta). For more info and to sign up, call (805) 967-7369 or visit fairviewgardens.org.
