Top Girls Water Polo Teams Compete in Tournament of Champions

TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JANUARY 11-24

At least there was more offense in the UCSB-Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball game than there was in the Alabama-LSU BCS Championship. The Gauchos came from behind to knock off Fullerton last week, 39-37. Coach Carlene Mitchell retained her sense of humor about the Gauchos’ halftime total of 14 points. “I could score 14 by myself going one-on-five,” she said.

The victory was Mitchell’s first in the Big West. The Gaucho women (1-1 in the conference, 6-7 overall) seek to go above .500 in two home games this week, Thursday night (Jan. 12) against UC Irvine and Saturday against UC Riverside. The Gaucho men (2-0, 7-5) will also be home Saturday night against Irvine after traveling to Riverside. Center Jaime Serna is questionable after injuring his right wrist in last week’s 77-64 victory over Cal State Fullerton. The Gauchos will certainly want him ready for their January 21 showdown against Long Beach State.

Westmont College is streaking in Golden State Athletic Conference basketball. While the Warrior women won their 10th consecutive game Tuesday, 56-47 over Biola, the men won their sixth straight over the 20th-ranked (NAIA poll) Eagles, 60-56. Westmont’s women, 15-1 overall, are ranked No. 4 in the NAIA. Junior forward Tugce Canitez was named GSAC women’s basketball Player of the Week after scoring 48 points in wins over Vanguard and San Diego Christian. With nine rebounds and eight assists against Vanguard, she flirted with a triple-double. The Warriors host Hope International in a double-header Saturday at Murchison Gym.

In high school action, the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions showcases the best in girls water polo this weekend. Nine of the top 10 teams in CIF Division 1 will compete, along with the top four in Division 2. Corona Del Mar, which ended Dos Pueblos High’s 68-game winning streak in December, heads the field. The 32-game tournament starts at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos pools.
