The southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Milpas St. South will be closed between 6am and 3pm daily from Wednesday, Feb. 1st through Friday, Feb. 3rd. During this time, crews will excavate portions of the ramp surface for upcoming improvements. Crews will also clear and grub for landscaping improvements as well as hydromulch. During the daytime closures, motorists can use the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Milpas St. North. Motorists should also be aware that Union Pacific will be working on the railroad tracks on Milpas St. during this time and will have Milpas St. closed at the railroad tracks.

Southbound Hwy 101 freeway closure on Feb. 6th from 11pm to 5am to allow crews to install joint sealer between the new bridges and the concrete approach slabs. Motorists will be detoured off the freeway at the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Milpas St. South and reenter the freeway at the southbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Milpas St.

Planned Work Activities (depending on weather):

Milpas St. bridges:

  • Weekdays: On Hwy 101, crews will continue work on the barrier rail over the bridge and on improvements to the median north of Milpas St. Crews will also excavate in preparation for widening on the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Milpas St. South. On Milpas St., crews will continue work on sidewalks, new electrical systems, and foundations for overhead lights.
  • Weeknights: On Feb. 6th, southbound Hwy 101 will be closed to allow crews to install joint sealer between the new bridges and the concrete approach slabs. Between Garden St. and the southbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Milpas St., one southbound Hwy 101 lane will be closed from 9pm to 11pm, then both lanes will be closed from 11pm until 5am, one lane will reopen between 5am and 6am, and both lanes will reopen at 6am on Feb. 7th. Motorists will be detoured off the freeway at the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Milpas St. South and reenter the freeway at the southbound Hwy 101 on-ramp at Milpas St. Milpas St. under Hwy 101 will also be closed weeknights as needed from 9pm to 6am for concrete finishing work on the new bridge.

Cacique St. under-crossing:

  • Crews have finished work on closure walls and continue patching concrete. On Hwy 101 over Cacique St., crews will continue work on the median safety barrier.

Northbound Hwy 101 widening and ramp improvements at Salinas St.

  • Work continues to install the new median safety barrier, irrigation, and landscaping fence. Crews will also repair guardrail in the shoulder areas. There will be northbound Hwy 101 nighttime slow lane closures as needed for guardrail repair between 9pm and 6am from Feb. 6th through 9th.

Southbound Hwy 101

  • Crews will repair guardrail in the shoulders and near the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramp at Hot Springs Rd. Between Feb. 6th and 9th, there will be nighttime fast lane and ramp closures as needed between 9pm and 6am for repair work. During ramp closures, motorists can use the southbound Hwy 101 off-ramps at Los Patos Way and Olive Mill Rd.

Hwy 101 will continue to have at least 2 lanes open during the day in each direction.

Hwy 101 bridge widening over Milpas St.:

Project Information:

The Highway 101 Operational Improvements between Milpas and Hot Springs include the reconstruction of two major interchanges, six new or improved bridges, freeway widening, and improvements to local streets and pedestrian pathways. The $57 million construction and landscaping project is funded by Proposition 1B, $13 million Measure D dollars, and state and federal gas taxes. This project is a joint Santa Barbara County Association of Governments, Caltrans, and City of Santa Barbara highway and local street improvement program.

Construction is in Stage 4 work, and overall construction is anticipated through summer 2012. The majority of construction will occur behind concrete barriers during daytime work hours; some nighttime lane closures will occur.
