Opening statements in the third murder trial of Corey Lyons took place on 10/12. Lyons, accused of gunning down his brother Daniel Lyons and Daniel’s partner, Barbara Scharton, in their Mesa home in May 2009, faces life without parole if convicted. The jury was chosen out of a North County pool because of media publicity in Santa Barbara over the last three years. This time around, Senior Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen is prosecuting Lyons, who saw his first two times in front of a jury end in mistrial, the first because of an inappropriate witness statement, the second because of a hung jury.
