This Saturday, October 8, is International Observe the Moon Night. View our planet’s favorite lunar body with the Santa Barbara Astronomical Unit (SBAU) — a club that provides telescopes and expert knowledge of the night sky — at these moon-themed celebrations in the S.B. area:

• Moon lovers who can’t wait for nightfall should orbit to Astronomy on Linden Lawn, when SBAU’s telescopes will be set up from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at the Linden Lawn area of Carpinteria State Beach (Linden Ave., Carpinteria) in conjunction with the Avocado Festival. Safety-filtered solar viewing will be installed during daylight hours and then removed at night for regular telescope viewing. Free. Call 964-8201.

• The Goleta Public Library (500 N. Fairview Ave., Goleta) will mark International Observe the Moon Night with a moon-themed slideshow at 6:30 p.m., followed by an after-sunset viewing of the moon and other space objects through SBAU’s special telescopes. Free. Call 964-7878.
