TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 29-DECEMBER 4

It was almost like old times at UCSB’s Thunderdome last Saturday night, as a crowd of 5,011 watched the Gauchos battle San Diego State in a men’s basketball thriller. The Aztecs won in overtime, 76-75.

On Wednesday night, November 30, it will be like old times. UNLV’s Runnin’ Rebels will oppose the Gauchos, reprising their showdowns when both teams were in the Big West Conference. Jerry Pimm, UCSB’s coach in those days, will be in the house. He will be honored as the newest “Legend of the Dome.” Bob Williams, who succeeded Pimm in 1998, will try to beat UNLV for the fourth straight time. It is a major challenge. While the Gauchos (4-1) lost for the first time Saturday, the Rebels (7-0) made a statement with a 90-80 victory over No. 1-ranked North Carolina. UNLV is ranked No. 18 on this week’s Associated Press poll.

Westmont College opens its Golden State Athletic Conference basketball schedule with a bang at Murchison Gym tonight (Tue., Nov. 29) against Azusa Pacific. The visiting Cougars are ranked No. 1 in the NAIA women’s preseason poll and No. 9 in the men’s. The Warrior women are ranked No. 20. UCSB’s women, meanwhile, will try to get their offense untracked on Friday night against the University of San Francisco.

San Marcos will be the first team to hit the home court in high school basketball tonight against Arroyo Grande. The Royals also will host Pacifica in a pair of soccer games at Warkentin Stadium.

Dos Pueblos High’s girls water polo team will open the season Wednesday against Cabrillo at the school’s Elings Aquatic Center. The Chargers, winners of four consecutive CIF championships, have not lost a game since the 2008-09 season – a string of 67 straight wins.

SBCC’s soccer team and Bishop Diego’s football squad are each one game away from reaching the highest rungs of their playoff ladders. The Vaqueros will face Hartnell, the top team in Northern California, in the State Community College men’s semifinals on Friday in Sacramento. Bishop’s Cardinals will travel to play Sierra Canyon in the CIF East Valley Division semis at Granada Hills High on Friday night.
