While it is true that Santa Barbara’s beauty is determined greatly by its striking natural landscape, the town itself is visually charming thanks to the Spanish architectural styles that dominate it. For the past 12 years, the Pearl Chase Society has presented its Annual Historic Homes Tour, which allows folks a peek inside several architecturally significant buildings. This year, the tour includes five homes on the Upper Eastside. The houses were built between 1897 and 1933 and represent several composition styles—Spanish Colonial Revival, Italian villa, California Craftsman, Spanish bungalow, and Andalusian Spanish Revival.

Formed in 1995, the Pearl Chase Society is an all-volunteer organization devoted to preserving S.B.’s heritage. The conservancy is named after 70-year resident of Santa Barbara, Pearl Chase (1888-1979). Chase, who moved to this seaside burg in 1909 after graduating from UC Berkeley, spent her formidable energies founding civic and cultural organizations, including the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation and the area chapter of the American Red Cross. She was also a crucial force behind saving the Moreton Bay Fig Tree, establishing Chase Palm Park, and restoring the Presidio.

The Annual Historic Homes Tour is Sunday, May 15, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets are $55. For more information and reservations, call 961-3938 or visit pearlchasesociety.org.
