The latest release from Shout! Factory is four CDs’ worth of bootleg nuggets from more than 20 years of Iggy Pop and the Stooges performances—tweaked to sound almost perfect, but still shaggy and alive. Pop is both a born performer and a force to be reckoned with, but he’s also a bit of a puzzle. The music is muscular—even bruising—yet never brutal, and always “musical.” Shout! Factory describes Pop as the “The Godfather of Punk,” but that is only part of the story; to these ears, Iggy is also the genius bastard son of garage rock. And, at heart, he is and always will be what his name proclaims: a pop artist. If you appreciate his work, buy this release. If you love rock and you don’t know Iggy Pop, you should probably give it a whirl, too. You won’t regret it, and you won’t forget it.
