Notes for Notes, a nonprofit that gives young people access to the world of music, will officially cut the ribbon on a new MusicBox recording studio on February 24 at 5:30 p.m., according to a press release issued by the organization. The entire Santa Barbara community is invited to celebrate and enjoy refreshments.

The new MusicBox is located at the Boys and Girls Club on 602 West Anapamu Street, and joins two other Santa Barbara locations — one on Canon Perdido Street at the Boys and Girls Club, and the other on Chapala Street in the Teen Center.

Executive director and founder Phillip Gilley said, “It’s very important that Notes for Notes has a presence on both sides of town.” Gang tensions may make it difficult for children to go easily to a studio on the opposite side of town. The new studio and the studio on Canon Perdido plan to collaborate via the Internet and with webcams. The board president added, “This will give kids from more corners of Santa Barbara a safe place near their homes to learn about the recording process and hopefully even start some careers in the music industry.”

The two locations in the Boys and Girls Clubs were made possible thanks in part to the hard work of CEO Michael Rattray and West Side location director Magda Arroyo. Arroyo said, “The MusicBox is a hot topic at Santa Barbara Boys and Girls Clubs.”

Gear was donated to the professional-grade studio by such notable musicians as Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode. Other donors included the Santa Barbara Bowl’s Education Outreach Committee and the Hot Topic Foundation.

Founder Phillip Gilley has plans to expand the program to other cities in other states, including Nashville, Tennessee. The new studio opens following two years of preparation.
