Polly Frost

Fewer things pair as well with wine as a good laugh, and this Thursday, Polly Frost aims to take advantage. The California-raised comedy writer will take to Oreana Winery at 7 p.m. for a one-woman show titled How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family. Based on Frost’s own experiences, and born out of a frustration with the amount of emphasis people put on grappling with their childhood, How to Survive is filled with anecdotal nods to the complicated, confusing, and sometimes downright hilarious family relationships we develop as grown-ups.

“I started this show because there’s all this literature that tells you to go into therapy and talk about your childhood. I think what nobody addresses is how weird your adult relationship with your family is,” Frost explained. “There’s all these unforeseen factors that come into your family and change the dynamic; your parents change, people marry other people—that’s the section called ‘When People You Love Marry People You Hate’—then there’s the toxic step-relationships, and you can’t prepare for any of it. It all hits you from one side or the other. How do you deal with it? I think you have to deal with it with a sense of humor.”

As a native Californian (and San Marcos High School alum), Frost has a pretty good feeling about bringing the show back home. Since moving from S.B. to her current home in New York City, Frost has seen her works published (and praised) by everyone from the New Yorker and the Atlantic to the New York Times. But her heart (and her humor) still lies in the Cali coastline.

“I think Southern Californians have a great sense of humor about themselves,” she said. And she’s ready to poke some fun. “Plus, I’m an audience whore—I just go after the laughs.”

Polly Frost brings How to Survive Your Adult Relationship with Your Family to Oreana Winery (205 Anacapa St.) this Thursday, August 18, at 7 p.m. Space is limited. Call 962-5857 to reserve.
