The renovations will result in significant improvements to the facility that was built in 1970. The estimated completion date for the renovation is in the fall/winter of 2012.

The interior of the shelter will be renovated to make it more inviting for the public and more functional for the staff, volunteers and animals. The animal intake and exam area, cat holding area, cat clinic and isolation areas will all be updated as well as the staff work areas. Potential adoptees will have a space to get to know animals they area considering for adoption. There will be facility updates to provide greater accessibility and meet the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Desks, counters, and shelving will be upgraded to accommodate individuals with special needs and differing abilities so all individuals who are animal owners and those who want to be animal owners are able to access services.

The project has a budget of $300,000 and the funding has been made possible through a financial partnership. The ADA facility upgrades will come from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding with $72,000 coming from the County CDBG funds and $24,000 coming from CDBG funds from the City of Lompoc. An independent donor has generously contributed $10,000 for this project. The County Animal Services Capital Trust Fund will provide the balance of the funding.

The County animal shelter provides services that are not available through any other facilities in the region. The County Animal Shelter in Lompoc serves the cities and unincorporated areas of mid-county providing assistance to a wide variety of customers including:

• Individuals who find stray animals

• Owners who have lost their pets

• Individuals who wish to adopt an animal

• Individuals who identify a potentially dangerous animal

Animals play a critical role in people’s lives. Research has also shown that animals contribute to the well being of their owners. The renovations of the Lompoc Animal Shelter will improve access and services for local residents and animals.
