Nearly $40,000 was allocated by Goleta City Council to community organizations with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program funds. These funds will help the non-profit recipients provide critical services to the low-income residents of Goleta.

“Several of the programs we supported address essential needs such as food, shelter and health care, as well as programs for seniors and youths. This funding is particularly important given the current state of the economy and will assist several thousand residents over the coming year” said Mayor Margaret Connell.

The Community Action Commission’s Senior Nutrition Program was awarded $5,000 and the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County received $5,400. Grants of $4,700 were given to Friendship Adult Day Care Center, the United Boys & Girls Club the Goleta Union School District for its Preschool Program at Ellwood Elementary School. the Pacific Pride Foundation’s Necessities of Life Program and the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics for provision of health services. Sarah House which provides end-of-life care for very low-income people suffering from terminal illnesses received $4,000 and New Beginnings Counseling Center which provides services to homeless people living in their vehicles received $2,000. The City Council also awarded almost $173,000 toward a sidewalk improvement program which would repair and install sidewalks in the residential areas of Goleta’s Old Town.

CDBG funds are distributed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The CDBG program offers a way for local communities to address the City’s housing and infrastructure needs in predominantly low- to moderate-income areas, and to provide services to the low-income, homeless and special needs populations.
