Facts about the Fleischmann and Spaulding Awards

The Fleischmann and Spaulding Awards will soon be given to 18 students who have demonstrated a strong record of academic achievement, outstanding leadership in their school, and service to others in their community.

The Fleischmann and Spaulding Awards reward and recognize the best of the best of the students in our county, acknowledging that these students are the leaders of tomorrow. The Fleischmann Award recipients receive a $2,000 award to go toward their college education. An additional $500 award is allocated to each Fleischmann Award recipient to be donated to the nonprofit organization of their choice. This allows them to reward others while expanding their philanthropic footprint, inspiring the next generation of philanthropists.

The candidate from the Fleischmann pool receiving the highest rating from the Fleischmann Subcommittee is also awarded the Edward Spaulding Award. The Spaulding Award carries an additional $1,000 award.

The Fleishmann Award was established by the Board of Trustees in 1998. Named after the Foundation’s founder Max Fleischmann, it is one of the Foundation’s several scholarship awards

The Spaulding Award is named in honor of Edward R. Spaulding, the first executive director of the Santa Barbara Foundation. During his twenty-six years of service to the Foundation, Ed took an active role in growing the Foundation and increasing its visibility throughout Santa Barbara County, making scores of site visits to nonprofit agencies and personally interviewing hundreds of student candidates for financial aid. In many ways, Ed personified the Foundation’s human touch, and he left a memorable mark on the community that was his lifelong home.

Santa Barbara Foundation’s mission is about giving back to the community. Caring individuals such as Mr. Spaulding and Mr. Fleischmann inspired these gifts that keep giving back, today and tomorrow.
