TOP SPORTING EVENTS: MARCH 10-14

UPDATE: Santa Barbara High will host Dinuba on Thursday in the State Regional Division 2 soccer semifinals. The Dons (30-0-1) defeated Arleta 4-0 in the first round. Dos Pueblos upset to-seeded Stockdale 1-0 in Division 1. The Chargers travel to San Fernando for the semifinals.

UCSB moved into the quarterfinals of the Big West Women’s Basketball Tournament with an 82-54 victory over Pacific. The Gauchos, who have won six consecutive games, will face Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

The undefeated Santa Barbara Dons are one of the top-seeded teams in this week’s State Regional Soccer Championships, while Dos Pueblos High’s strong showing in the CIF Southern Section playoffs earned the Chargers a berth in the competition.

As the No. 1 team in Division 2, the Dons (29-0-1) will host Arleta (11-4-2) at 4 p.m. Tuesday (March 9) at Peabody Stadium. Dos Pueblos, because of its larger enrollment, is in the Division 1 field as the eighth-seeded team. The Chargers (15-6-7) will travel to top-seeded Stockdale (13-5-5) on Tuesday. The semifinals Thursday will take place at the home fields of the higher-seeded teams, and the championship matches will take place Saturday at Warren High in Downey.

Santa Barbara beat Dos Pueblos 3-0 for the Division 2 sectional championship Friday night at UCSB. The Dons have scored 109 goals and allowed just 12. Their last seven goals in the playoffs were scored by seven different players, and 18 players have notched goals for them this season.

UCSB has a shot at its third straight appearance in the NCAA women’s tournament, but the Gauchos will have to win four games in four days at the Big West Basketball Tournament to make it. They are seeded No. 5 in the conference tournament at the Anaheim Convention Center and will play eighth-seeded Pacific at 12 p.m. Wednesday.

The Gaucho men will not play until the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday. They finished on top of the regular season standings to earn the No. 1 seed.
