Could Santa Barbara begin a trend by adopting a sister city in Haiti? Creating a supportive bond with a town in Haiti would offer us long period of commitment, empathy, and understanding as we give what is needed for the rebuilding of a part of Haiti. Making an initial step to stand with a people for 15 years, sending teams from our community to give aid as desired by that Haitian group. What comes to mind would be teams made up of local heroes—teachers, poets, carpenters, artists, dentists, doctors, nurses, farmers—and ongoing community support of educating ourselves about Haiti’s history and people; and pledging funds and work here to maintain an active ongoing relationship. Thank you, and Nick Welsh, for the great history lesson [Angry Poodle, “Dog of Another Color,” 1/21/2010].— Margaret Watson
