For most, reading the newspaper or a book is one of life’s simple pleasures. Unfortunately, there are far too many Californians who by adulthood remain illiterate. In an effort to change that, the Santa Barbara Library offers an Adult Literacy Program. The volunteer-led program offers one-on-one tutoring for folks who want to learn to read. With patience, support, and confidentiality, tutors help adults “reach their own life goals, such as reading to a child or getting a better job.” If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, sign up for the upcoming training course that takes place Saturday afternoons, September 19 and 26, from 12:30-5 p.m., in the Townley Room at the S.B. Public Library (40 E. Anapamu St.). For more information, call 564-5619, email bschwartzberg@santabarbaraca.gov, or visit sbplibrary.org.
