The fall sports season begins in earnest this weekend. There is a full slate of football games, as well as college soccer and high school girls volleyball and boys water polo.

Dos Pueblos is the only high school with a home football game. The Chargers entertain the San Luis Obispo Tigers tonight (Fri., Sept. 11) at their campus stadium. In community college football, the SBCC Vaqueros will take on Southern California’s No. 1 team, College of the Canyons, at 6 p.m. Saturday at La Playa Stadium.

There are two opportunities to see UCSB’s nationally ranked men’s soccer team this weekend. The Gauchos host Rutgers in a televised (Fox Soccer Channel) match at 8 p.m. tonight, and on Sunday at 6 p.m. UCSB takes on Loyola Marymount.

An addition to the Gauchos’ schedule was announced this week. They will face Mexico's U-17 National Team in an exhibition match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The Mexican team is gearing up for the 2009 U-17 World Championship to be held in Nigeria beginning on Oct. 24. The Mexicans won the world title in 2005.

Tickets for the match, which is part of UCSB’s recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, are priced at $15 for and $8 for youth 12 and under. They can be purchased online (ucsbgauchos.com), by phone (893-UCSB), at the UCSB Athletics Ticket Office and at several soccer retailers in the community.
