The family of USC baseball player Taylor Grigsby has filed a lawsuit against the Regents of the University of California over an injury Grigsby sustained while playing at UCSB. While running to make a catch on April 18, 2008, Grigsby, whose father played major league baseball, collided with a plank of wood that was concealed in the grass in the UCSB baseball stadium’s left field, shattering his kneecap. The Grigsby family is suing for an unnamed sum, which will be determined by the total bills for surgeries, rehabilitation time, and emotional anguish that Grigsby’s parents experienced as a result of the incident. Attorney Patrick McGarrigle, who is representing the family in this suit, said that any parents who “watch [their child’s] dreams shatter before their very eyes” are entitled to a monetary compensation. Part of the reason no specific total has been decided upon, he said, is that the Grigsbys are “determining how much suffering they have taken.” While the plank was not in the field of play, McGarrigle maintains the plank’s presence even in the area constitutes “the carelessness of people who should know better.”
