It might seem odd at first that Alaska’s premiere sport fishing lodge at Waterfall Resort would base its marketing department in Santa Barbara. Because the resort runs seasonally in the summer, the marketing department thought it best to remain close to where their guests live in southern California. But the connection becomes clearer when original marketing employees thought “Why move when we can stay here?” And although the two cities might seem far apart, the marketing department’s latest project could bring Santa Barbara residents closer to Alaska than they think.

This past week, the Waterfall Resort revamped their website and partnered with the online video site YouTube.com to launch a contest that would give winners a three-night, four-day stay at the Alaskan resort. The contest asks participants to create a three-minute long video promoting the following: the Waterfall Resort, Alaskan fishing, salmon fishing, halibut fishing, general fishing, video bloopers, and salmon or halibut recipes. “One of the most interesting aspects of this contest is that the videos don’t have to be shot at Waterfall to be eligible,” marketing director Chuck Baird said. “We encourage anglers from all across the globe to submit their fishing videos.”

Living in a city near the beach, Santa Barbara residents have all the resources they need to shoot their entries. Interested participants have until July 31 to submit what material they have. The winning video will be based on total views, average ratings, and social media scores through sites like digg.com and delicious.com.

“YouTube was the perfect vehicle for us,” Baird said. “We believe that a contemporary first-class web contest is the best way to announce that, although we are a historic cannery, we are also a contemporary fishing resort.”

Located in Ketchikan, Alaska, the Waterfall cannery opened in 1912. Then in 1982, the resort opened and has since remodeled all buildings to become one of the top remote sport fishing destinations in the world. The resort takes pride in their four-star guest services and one-to-one, staff-to-guest ratio. Waterfront accommodations include historic Cape Cod style cabins, lodge rooms, two-bedroom townhouses, and Egg House suites (The Egg House formerly housed operations relating to the processing and storage for salmon eggs.)

With high-end, comfortable accommodations and world-class renowned fishing, the Waterfall Resort welcomes all anglers from novice to avid skill levels, celebrities, and professional athletes. As opening day on June 6 approaches, the Resort expects nothing but success.

“We know this 2009 season will be fantastic and we have some incredible package incentives on our website,” Baird said. “Waterfall has a very loyal following. After just one visit, most of our guests are hooked on Waterfall Resort and return the following summer.”
