Santa Barbara’s endless summer environment will soon serve as the venue for a free skin cancer screen, as part of the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Road to Healthy Skin Tour. In light of the more than one million diagnosed cases of skin cancer per year in the United States, the Skin Cancer Foundation is seeking to educate the public about sun safety, traveling more than 17,000 miles to explain the proper ways to prevent skin cancer, and how to perform monthly skin checks at home.

In addition to being the most common form of cancer in the U.S., skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers and is considered the most treatable if identified early on. Even so, skin cancer claims 10,000 individuals annually across the nation. “Many people don’t know that they should get a yearly skin exam,” said Perry Robins, MD, president of the Skin Cancer Foundation, in a recent press release. “In the early stages, skin cancer is almost always curable.”

On Wednesday, September 2, visitors to La Cumbre Plaza will be provided with free full body skin cancer screenings-with the help of local dermatologists-and the latest information. The campaign stop, sponsored by the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, will also distribute sunscreen samples and coupons.

The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is a nonprofit cancer diagnosis and treatment center. With the help of committed volunteers and professionals, it has striven for 60 years to aid people with the disease. It is, according to its literature, one of the nation’s leading organizations for providing patient support programs as well as the latest technology.

The September 2 event will take place from 1-7 p.m. at the Healthy Skin Tour’s 38-foot customized RV in La Cumbre Plaza, 3815 State Street. Screenings are first come, first serve, so those who would like to participate are recommended to show up early.
