The baseball season has not gone entirely the way S.B. City College had hoped, but the Vaqueros still have a shot at the postseason playoffs. SBCC (22-18 overall) faces the three top teams in the Western State Conference this week, with a chance of climbing into third place. That spot is currently held by Ventura College, which comes into Pershing Park for a crucial 2:30 p.m. game today (Tue., Apr. 28). The Vaqueros also will host Hancock on Thursday and travel on Friday to Cuesta.

In other college baseball action today, UCSB hosts Cal State Bakersfield in a nonleague game, and Westmont College closes out its season at home against Azusa Pacific. In last week’s road game against the 12th-ranked Cougars, Westmont junior Tim Crabbe hurled a three-hitter for a 4-2 victory. After a 3-20 start, the Warriors have gone 13-10 in the second half of the season.

In high school baseball, San Marcos and Dos Pueblos play each other twice this week as the tight Channel League race continues.

UCSB’s track and field team has one dual meet at home this year, and it’s this Saturday against Big West rival Cal Poly.

Two weekly events for runners, swimmers, and triathletes are about to start. The first Reef & Run Summer Series launches today at the Cabrillo Bathhouse, and the popular Nite Moves begins Wednesday, May 6, at Leadbetter Beach.
