Law and Disorder 10-23

The U.S. Supreme Court on 10/20 declined to hear an appeal of a California Supreme Court decision allowing Senior Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen to prosecute Jesse James Hollywood. Lawyers for Hollywood-accused of masterminding the 2000 murder of Nicholas Markowitz-sought the nation’s highest court in an attempt to remove Zonen because of his participation in the 2006 movie Alpha Dog, a dramatization of Hollywood’s story. Regardless, Zonen has been taken off the case as a precaution. Hollywood will next appear in court on 10/29.

Bakersfield resident Tyrone Edward Chambers on 10/8 allegedly pulled a fire alarm in UCSB’s Santa Catalina dorm in an effort to drive a female student from her room. UCSB police say the woman had previously been taken against her will by Chambers, but she escaped to the safety of her room. Chambers is now in the custody of Los Angeles police in connection with an unrelated warrant. UCSB police are seeking information about the incident.

Jesus Santiago was sentenced on 10/16 to 11 years and four months behind bars for attempted forcible rape, grand theft of personal property, and other charges stemming from an attack on a woman in September 2007. According to court records, Santiago had accosted the woman near the intersection of Micheltorena and San Andres streets and threatened to rape her. She escaped. Santiago later pled guilty to the charges.
