Santa Barbara youths in grades 3-8 can embark on a lifetime of physical fitness through a new running program, Run for Life.

There are three aspects to the program – coached clinics; incentives for jogging miles; and organized fun runs.

The clinics take place on Sundays from noon to 1 p.m. at Santa Barbara Running, 118 Anacapa St. Runners will log miles to earn incentives such as shoelace tags and bracelets.

Run for Life participants will have free entry into one-mile fun runs. The next scheduled race is the Psipina’s mile at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 18, at Lake Los Carneros (Covington Way in Goleta).

On November 1, there will be a mile run in conjunction with the Santa Barbara Half Marathon at Leadbetter Beach. The youth event starts at 10 a.m.

Run for Life is cosponsored by Club West, a local track and field support organization, and the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department.

The Club West Junior High Cross-Country Championships, a two-mile race, are taking place at 4 p.m. October 30 at Elings Park.

    SBCC Invitational Cross-Country

Area runners can challenge themselves Saturday, October 18, on a seaside cross-country course in the first race of the SBCC Invitational at Shoreline Park. The open/coaches three-mile race will start at 10 a.m. Entries will be taken at 9 a.m. The $10 entry fee will benefit SBCC’s cross-country teams.

    The Vaqueros will be racing a dozen other teams in the invitational three-mile women’s race (11 a.m.) and men’s four-miler (11:45 a.m.).

The course will include loops around Shoreline Park and Leadbetter Beach.
