At its Tuesday, October 7 meeting, the Santa Barbara City Council denied an appeal of cab driver Julio Maganda, owner of the 777 Taxi Company, whose permit was revoked earlier this year by the Fire and Police Commission after he’d incurred four moving violations in the past year. Maganda, a single father, threw himself at the mercy of the council, explaining the revocation would cause a serious financial hardship to his family. He noted that none of the violations had occurred while he had a passenger in his cab and asked to be put on probation instead. The Fire and Police Commission had rejected that approach because Maganda had already been put on notice for his driving violations. Councilmembers noted that the five cabs Maganda’s company owns can still generate income.
