The Santa Barbara Schools’ Board of Trustees voted this week to table a controversial new dress code until 5/13. The initial proposal included, among other things, rendering illegal “the presence of any apparel that denotes membership in a gang.” Boardmembers worried how it would be enforced or even defined. The proposed do-not-wear list included white, black, or blue T-shirts when worn in conjunction with low sagging pants or long shorts with knee-high socks.

In order to eliminate competition from the Parent Teacher Student Association’s lunchtime snack sales at Santa Barbara High School, the Santa Barbara School District has limited lunchtime snack sales there by other groups, including The Forge newspaper, the Dons Net Cafe, and the Special Education Department. The campus organizations are miffed to be losing revenue, and some students have expressed displeasure at the limitation of lunchtime options.
